Scott County Sheriff's Deputies Serve Search Warrant - More Arrest Made after Poor Choices by Offenders

Scott County-On 5-4-2022, Scott County Sheriff's Office Deputies and Austin City Police Officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Austin, Indiana where drugs and drug paraphernalia were located and seized.  Detective Lieutenant John Hartman developed probable cause of illegal activity at the residence after conducting an investigation that started from a tip from a concerned citizen.  Once the search warrant was granted by Scott County Circuit Court Judge Jason Mount, Deputies responded to the location on Cross Street in Austin where the search warrant was executed.  Arrested at the scene was Brenda Swafford, 35, of Austin, Indiana and Justin Jewell, 44, also of Austin, Indiana, both charged with multiple drug charges and other charges related to a young child who also lived within the home. Additionally, both Jewell and Swafford were currently on probation from drug dealing convictions through Scott County in 2021. The following charges are from this latest search warrant;

  • Brenda Swafford was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Neglect of a Dependent Child, Unlawful Possession of a Syringe, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Paraphernalia.
  • Justin Jewell was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Child Abuse or Neglect, Unlawful Possession of a Syringe, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

Craig Tharp, 36 of Lexington, IN was arrested on a Warrant for a Parole Violation.

Alexander Riley, 23 of Crothersville, IN was arrested on a Warrant for Dealing in Methamphetamine.

On April 29th, Deputies made the following arrests;

Makenzie Smith, 23 of Franklin, IN was arrested on a Warrant for Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Cocaine or Narcotic Drug.

Justin Burns, 40 of Austin, IN was arrested on Warrants for Escape and Failure to Comply for Residential Entry.

Geddy Engleking, 37 of Scottsburg, IN was arrested on a Warrant for Public Intoxication, Resisting Law Enforcement and Disorderly Conduct.

On May 1st, Deputies made the following arrests;

Jerry Seaver, 34 of Scottsburg, IN was arrested for Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of Cocaine or Scheduled II Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Justice, and Possession of Marijuana.

On May 2nd, Benton Shields, 19 of Lexington, IN was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine and Maintaining a Common Nuisance.

On May 3rd, Deputies made the following arrests;

Trenton Ragland, 20 of Scottsburg IN was arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Felon and Carrying a Handgun without a Permit.

Oma White, 43 of Austin, IN was arrested for Theft less than $750.00 ( 4 counts ), Legend Drug Possession, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Trespass, Possession of Scheduled Substance, False Informing and Identity Deception.

On May 5th, Chelsey Sears, 31 of Middletown, OH was arrested for Possession of a Scheduled Substance, Possession or Use of a Legend Drug, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Trafficking with an Inmate, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

NOTE:  Not only are Deputies arresting the offenders on the street, our Deputy Jailers are offering services and classes to our inmates.  These services and classes provide a path for our inmates to get clean while simultaneously receiving much needed job skills training, their high school equivalency diploma, substance abuse treatment, spiritual involvement with numerous church groups and association with peer support groups such as Thrive.
