Deputy Assisted a Disable Vehicle on Interstate 65 and Resulted in Drug Arrests

On August 17, 2018, Deputy Joe Baker responded to Interstate 65 (southbound) at the 27 mile marker to assist a disabled vehicle. Upon arrival, Deputy Baker observed two male subjects, identified as James Byers and Gregory Leonard, outside of the vehicle attempting to change a tire. Deputy Baker observed a female, identified as Toni Knudson inside the vehicle. Deputy Baker made contact with vehicle owner, James Byers, to see how he could assist and noticed expired plates on the vehicle. Deputy Baker cross referenced the expired plate to the vehicle owner and Mr. James Byers had an active warrant out of Clark County for drug related charges.

Criminal activity was suspected and Deputy Baker requested a K-9 unit. Upon arrival, K-9, Cyrus, was deployed by K-9 handler, Joshua Watterson, to do an exterior search of the vehicle. K-9 Cyrus was able to show a positive indication for the possible presence of a narcotic substance near the trunk, passenger, and driver’s side door. A syringe loaded with the presence of a clear substance was located in the trunk of the vehicle. Multiple syringes were then found on the interior of the vehicle. Additionally, Toni Knudson attempted to discard a flashlight during the investigation and Deputy Baker discovered two ($100) counterfeit bills located inside of the flashlight.

Gregory Leonard and Toni Knudson were taken into custody. Upon search incident to arrest, a total of 1.5 grams of a crystal-like substance was discovered in Leonard’s possession. The substance field tested positive for methamphetamine. Upon arrival at the Scott County Detention Center, Toni Knudson was searched and 15 grams of a crystal-like substance was found in her possession. The substance field tested positive for methamphetamine. Additionally, (2) syringes were found in her possession.
