Drug Drop Gone Bad...Scott County Sheriff's Deputies Arrest Father/Son Duo
Scott County- On 9-20-2024, Scott County Sheriff Jail Deputy Tim Applegate was out with an inmate work crew in the City of Scottsburg when he noticed a suspicious person "circling the area" where the inmate crew was working. Deputy Applegate noticed the person entering and exiting a restroom near the worksite and then abruptly leave the area. Deputy Applegate requested assistance at the worksite from other Deputies, who located controlled substances in the bathroom where the suspicious person had allegedly placed the drugs inside. An investigation into the incident revealed the suspicious person, identified as Charles E. Simpson, 61, of Scottsburg, Indiana had allegedly planned the "drug drop" with his son, Justin Simpson, 36, who served on the work detail assigned to Deputy Applegate. Charles E. Simpson was located by Sheriff's Detective Donovan McCutcheon later that day and questioned about the incident. Charles E. Simpson was consequently arrested for the following.
- Conspiracy to Traffic with an Inmate (2 Counts)
- Conspiracy to Deal Marijuana
- Possession of Marijuana
- Possession of Methamphetamine

- Possession of Paraphernalia
Justin Simpson was subsequently removed from the Inmate Trustee Program and the following additional criminal charges were requested through the Scott County Prosecutor's Office.

This investigation has concluded with no other suspects identified. Jail Deputy Tim Applegate, Detective Donovan McCutcheon, Jail Commander Doug Herlad, and Evidence Custodian Mike Nichols worked tenaciously, resulting in a successful conclusion to this investigation.
