Deputy Fired Upon While Checking Abandoned Vehicle


August 25, 2013: a Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy was fired upon during an investigation into an abandoned vehicle which was located on Reid Road in Scott County. 

Reserve Deputy Daniel Dicken received the call for service at approximately 8:17 PM and upon his arrival noted that a Green Pontiac Grand Prix was sitting along the roadway and that it was unoccupied. 

Deputy Dicken was attempting to check the registration of the vehicle by making an inquiry on the Vehicle Identification Number or V.I.N.  when he was fired upon at least three (3) times by an unidentified person, some eighty (80) to one hundred (100) yards away.  Deputy Dicken returned gunfire as he was seeking cover.  Deputy Dicken was not injured during the exchange of gunfire and it is unknown if the gunman was injured during the incident. 

Multiple agencies conducted a massive search for the gunman, however, no one was found.  The abandoned vehicle was reported stolen from Brown County Indiana and is being processed for any trace of evidence.
