POLICE REPORTS-How do I get a copy?

How do I file a police report?

If you have been the victim of a burglary, theft, battery or assault (or any incident other than an auto accident) a police report would need to be created to document the crime. All police reports are created by officers.

If you need to report an incident please dial 812-752-8400 and central dispatch will contact an officer in your area. He will document the situation and create the police report.

Some reports can be made over the telephone.

If you need to add information to your previous report, you should leave a message for the original officer who took the report or by calling the Sheriff’s dept 812-752-8400.

Police Reports are usually ready within 5 business days. Copies of these reports can be obtained at the Sheriff’s Office and there is no fee for the first copy requested.

How do I get a copy of an Accident Report?

Patrol Deputies prepare traffic accident reports on accidents they have investigated in Scott County. These reports are filed within five (5) days of the date of the accident. There is a $10.00 fee for each copy and $20.00 fee for photos. We only accept money orders made payable to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. NO CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED.

You may also get reports on line at https://www.buycrash.com/   Reports purchased online are Official State of Indiana Crash Reports. Reports are usually $12.00 each and are available online immediately upon purchase.

How do I file a protection order?

You can request a protection order at the Community Corrections office, Monday thru Friday 8:30 am - 4pm. Protection orders are served by the Scott County Sheriff's Office.
Basically a Protection Order also commonly referred to as an Adult Abuse Order, Child Protection Order, or Ex Parte Order of Protection. It is a Court order signed by a Judge which gives a respondent (defendant) certain directions and explains the consequences if the order is violated.

A protection order may be obtained for people who have been assaulted, abused, harassed, stalked, threatened, or harmed from one or more adults.

A protection order is only a piece of paper and we suggest that any petitioner also make a report to the proper law enforcement agency and consider plans to further ensure your safety and the safety of your family and friends.

Victims of Domestic Violence are encouraged to apply for Orders of Protection, because it is a crime (invasion of privacy) to violate them. This gives law enforcement greater authority to enforce the provisions of these orders and results in a new charge being filed. For more information visit www.in.gov/judiciary or call the prosecutor’s office 812-752-8466.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RESTRAINING ORDER AND A PROTECTION ORDER AND WHICH ONE DO I NEED?

A protection order is an order issued through the court for persons who have had a domestic relationship (blood relation, intimate relationship, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, etc.) A restraining order covers anything not described under the order of protection, above. You must contact the Clerk’s office for an order of protection.

How do I obtain a CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK?

The Sheriff's Office may provide certain information to the public that is available for public disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act. This would include information from the Sheriff's Office Records Management System on Incident/Offense Reports, Jail Booking Records, and Warrant Records. Exceptions would be for records relating to active/ongoing investigations, certain personnel records, records that have been sealed/expunged by court order, and records involving juvenile offenders or juvenile suspects. There is no fee associated with processing these requests. We cannot provide information relating to records maintained by any other law enforcement agency. You would need to contact those agencies directly for information from their records. A form must be picked up at the Sheriff’s Office, once returned; the record is available the next business day. Cost when you pick up is $10.00

WARRANT OF ARREST-How do I find out if I have a warrant for my arrest?

What do I do if I have one? The Sheriff's Office maintains Warrants of Arrest issued by the Circuit and Superior Courts. All of these warrants constitute public records under the Freedom of Information Act. Any person can obtain information on arrest warrants pertaining to himself or herself or any other person by this website. Such information as the date of the warrant, charge(s) specified on the warrant, bond amount, and issuing court can be provided. Many arrest warrants are served by deputies working in the field, either during vehicle stops or by visiting the last known home address or work address of the person named in the warrant. Other warrants are served when people voluntarily surrender themselves to the Sheriff's Office after learning a warrant exists for their arrest. Most warrants will have a bond specified by the court that a person in custody is required to post before being released.

Misdemeanor arrest warrants may be served anywhere in the State of Indiana. Felony arrest warrants are extraditable from anywhere within the United States. The Sheriff's Office is very aggressive in serving arrest warrants, and extradition will generally be authorized whenever we are notified a person is in custody in another County or State. Any person wanting information about an arrest warrant or how to take care of an active warrant should contact the Sheriff's Office. We will make every effort to make a reasonable accommodation to allow the person satisfy the warrant within the boundaries of the law and department policy.

I received a Tax Warrant Letter, what is this for?

The Indiana Dept of Revenue collection process begins with the proposed assessment (AR-80). This bill lists the tax type, tax period, due date and amount due. An explanation for the billing also accompanies this stage of the process. A demand notice for payment is the next stage allowing the taxpayer only 10 days to respond. If your account reaches the warrant stage, you must pay the total amount due or accept the expense and consequences of the warrant. Although this is not a warrant for your arrest, the information will appear on a credit report or title search and may become a lien on your property. The warrant is filed with all county clerks’ offices in which you have assets. The Sheriff’s Office has up to 120 days to collect the amount due or substantial payments before the Department takes further action, which may include turning your account over to a collection agency. You may contact the Collections Division by calling 317-232-2165 or via fax 317-234-4161.
