"It's just Marijuana You Say"...Folks, You Better Think Again!

Scott County-On 4-23-2024, Scott County Sheriff's Office First Sergeant Johnney  Coomer and Deputy Logan Barger were traveling east on McClain Avenue in the City of Scottsburg. First Sergeant Coomer initiated a traffic stop on a silver passenger car for a vehicle registration violation and upon approaching the stopped car, deputies were alerted to suspicious movement by the front seat passenger, identified as Derek J. Tanksley, 37, of Salem, Indiana. After securing Tanksley and the driver of the vehicle, identified as Breraton R. Long (NFI), First Sergeant Coomer and Deputy Barger began investigating the suspicious activity they witnessed upon walking up to the vehicle. Located during the roadside investigation was suspected Methamphetamine, Paraphernalia, a bag of alleged Marijuana, and a clear plastic bowl containing alleged Marijuana sprinkled with a powder substance, which field tested positive for Fentanyl. All of the above substances/items were located during the incident to arrest search of Derek J. Tanksley. Long (the driver of the vehicle) was cited for Driving while Suspended and for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a False/Fictitious Registration Plate. Long was released at the scene. Derek J. Tanksley was arrested for the following offenses.

  •    Possession of Methamphetamine
  •    Obstruction of Justice
  •    Possession of a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance
  •    Possession of Marijuana
  •    Visiting a Common Nuisance

Sheriff Goodin conveyed the following... "Folks, I hear it all the time how marijuana is no big deal...leave it alone.  Here is a perfect example of why my deputies treat marijuana like any other illegal substance.  Kids are buying and using marijuana more now than ever, partly because of what they hear from adults, that marijuana is no big deal. This marijuana was laced with Fentanyl, which it takes less than one granule to be lethal...think about that! Your Scott County Sheriff's Office will continue to enforce all illegal substance laws while I am your Sheriff...it's the responsible, and safe thing to do".
